Lizzie Taylor

August 18, 1919 — May 13, 2016

Mrs. Lizzie Johnson Taylor (Mama Liz), age 96, of Columbus died Friday, May 13, 2016 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.  A graveside service, with Rev. James Black officiating, will follow at Wofford Cemetery near Vernon, AL at 3:45 PM.



Mrs. Taylor was born August 18, 1919 in Lamar County, AL to the late Andrew and Florence Stanford Johnson. She was employed by South Central Bell for 35 years and was a longtime member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was also an active member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church.  Mama Liz was  an avid reader, a wonderful cook and an excellent seamstress. She also created beautiful embroidered and needlepoint pieces.  She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Tom Taylor, five brothers and three sisters.


She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Jan and Rev. Jerry Horton of Columbus,  grandsons Christian Horton and his wife Amy of Sumrall, MS and Andy Horton and his wife Jennifer of West Monroe, LA and twelve  great-grandchildren.


Pallbearers will be Christian Horton, Andy Horton, Taylor Kelly, Gage Horton, Kaleb Horton and Cameron Horton.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the staffs of the Arrington and Sanctuary Hospice House for their love and excellent care.
