Clara Von Kanel

February 8, 1926 — July 24, 2016

Mrs. Clara Easley Von Kanel, age 90, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo, surrounded by her daughter Leslie and son Eddie.   Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Gunter & Peel Funeral Home, with Dr. Randy Von Kanel officiating, assisted by Rev. Bill Duncan. Interment will immediately follow in Friendship Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday , July 29, 2016 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM  at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home.

Known affectionately by her family as Mother, Maw, Momma, Granmommie and Aunt Clara, Mrs. Von Kanel was born February 8, 1926 in Birmingham, AL to the late Lonnie Rufus and Eula Mae Ashmore  Easley. She had several occupations throughout her life, which included beautician, bus driver and mail carrier. She enjoyed bowling, traveling and playing bingo, winning more often than not. She was a longtime member of East End Baptist Church and loved her Fidelis  Sunday School Class, especially her teacher, Ms Golda Vandiver. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edmond Von Kanel and  and all of her siblings, L.R., Eldridge and Oakley Easley and Martine Polk and Eula Mae Hall.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Leslie and Bill Akers of Knoxville, TN  and her son Eddie Von Kanel of Columbus, her grandchildren Michelle Graf (Bob), William R. Kees, Jr. (Melody), Andrew Scott Kees (Jamie), Elliott Matthew Von Kanel (Molly), Brittany Carol Buttrey (Clint), Audrey Leigh Wright (Jake) and Kara Danielle Von Kanel.  She is also survived by thirteen great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Steve Guist, David Butler, Ricky Von Kanel, Bill Kees, Jr.,  Andy Kees, George Von Kanel, Matt Von Kanel and Bob Graf. Honorary pallbearers will be her nieces and nephews, Travis Berry, Bill Butler and The Fidelis Sunday School Class.
