Douglas John (Jack) Weseli, 82, died peacefully on October 29, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Services will held at Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus, MS at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 with Reverend Robert Dore officiating. Visitation will be held at 9:30, at Annunciation Church prior to the Funeral Mass. Memorial Funeral Home of Columbus is in charge of arrangements.
Jack Weseli was born March 29, 1934, in Celina, Ohio to the late Fenton and Hilda Weseli. Jack was husband to Peggy Weseli. He was an active member of Annunciation Catholic Church in Columbus, MS.
Jack graduated in 1956 from Ohio State University with a degree in Animal Science and in 1957 from Kansas State University with a Master’s Degree in Animal Nutrition. Afterwards, Jack served in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1958 to 1961. Upon return from overseas, he married Margaret “Peggy” Unterbrink of Columbus Grove, Ohio on June 10, 1961. In 1964, Jack and his family moved to Columbus, Mississippi where he was owner/manager of nationally known Glenn Angus Farm. He was recognized as a national Angus cattle judge at shows in Denver, Ft Worth, Dallas, and the Dixie National Livestock show in Jackson, MS.
In 1974, Jack purchased Elm Lake Ranch near Columbus, MS. His career included a successful partnership with Paul “Bear” Bryant’s ranch located near Eutaw, AL and being regional manager for Lovana Farms. Jack was a member of the Mississippi Angus Association having served two terms as president.
In 1994, transitioning into retirement, Jack developed and was first president of Elm Lake Golf Course and sub-division. Jack had survived a severe heart attack in 1978 and was a recipient of a heart transplant performed at UAB Hospital, in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his only sibling, Sheila Dalton; his four children, Craig Weseli, Scott Weseli (Debbie), Renee Weseli Rice (Pete Vozzo) , and Brett Weseli; eight grandchildren, Jake Weseli (Jessica), Brooke Gordon (Andrew), Brody Weseli, Bradley Weseli, Cooper Weseli , Graham Weseli, Anna Love Little (Kyle), and Meg Rice and one great grandson, William Fenton Little.
Pallbearers will be Jack’s grandsons, Jake Weseli, Brody Weseli, Bradley Weseli, Cooper Weseli, Graham Weseli, and son-in-law Pete Vozzo. Honorary pallbearers are Clint Dean, Willie Menotti, Windy Swedenburg, Bill Swedenburg, Doug Yelverton, Nick Hairston, and Howard Fisackerly.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Jack Reed and the many physicians and staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle, the doctors and staff of the Heart Transplant Team at UAB Hospital, and the staff at Fresenius Medical Care, for their care over the years. Additionally, the family wishes to give special thanks to Annette and Deanna Jones, caregivers, for the comfort provided him.
