Dr. John Thomas Frazier

February 22, 1925 — December 1, 2016

John Thomas Frazier, M.D., age 91, passed away at his home in Columbus MS  on December 1, 2016.  Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tony Proctor and Dr. Prentiss M. Gordon, Sr. officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Limb Cemetery in Crawford, MS.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the Carolyn Room at First United Methodist Church, Columbus.  Memorial Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Dr. Frazier was born on February 22, 1925 in Crawford, Mississippi to the late Thomas Weston Frazier, M.D. and Neppie Louise Atkins Frazier.  He was a general practitioner, then a dermatologist for 52 years, while a lifelong gentleman farmer. He retired from  his medical practice at the age of 80. Dr. Frazier was an active member in First United Methodist Church and a longtime board member of the Methodist Hour of Mississippi.  He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with a never-ending love.  He was a well-known resident of Lowndes County. Dr. Frazier enjoyed travel, attending medical meetings across the United States and around the world.  He never met a stranger and was kind and compassionate to everyone.  He was a generous man, helping others in need.

Dr. Frazier was preceded in death by his parents, T. W. and Neppie Frazier, sister Jessie Frazier Moore, and nephew, Arnold Finch Moore. He always fondly remembered the people of Crawford and reminisced often about growing up there.

He attended high school in West Point, MS and then served in the Army medical corps during World War II in England.  Dr. Frazier received his medical training at the University of Mississippi, the University of Tennessee and the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Dr. Frazier spent sixty-eight years of marriage with the love of his life, Chellye Hoover Frazier.  He loved to dance to his favorite song, Stardust.  Music always brought a smile to his face, especially Lawrence Welk.

Dr. Frazier was involved in many civic and county organizations. He was a Boy Scout Leader, receiving a Silver Beaver award for 25 years of service.  He actively participated in the Lions Club, attending the International Lions Club meeting in France in 1962.  Since much of his time was spent in farming operations in Lowndes County, he was especially pleased to serve on the board of Holcim Industries in Artesia.  The town of Crawford was dear to his heart; he actively supported Crawford Methodist Church, as his dad was a founding father.  He will be remembered for his love of God and family, his kindness to patients, and service to the communities of Columbus and Crawford.  He was passionate about helping others in any way possible.  A quiet smile and endearing sense of humor were readily available as well as his sincere ability to listen carefully to patients and friends.  For pleasure, Dr. Frazier was an avid quail and pheasant hunter.

Dr. Frazier is survived by his wife Chellye and four children, Day Frazier Anders (Wayne) of Gulf Shores, AL; John Thomas Frazier, Jr. of Columbus, MS; Chellye Frazier Pomeroy (Don) of Salem, SC; and Kirk D. Frazier (RaDonna) of Hattiesburg, MS.  His five grandchildren include Weston Frazier Pomeroy (Sarah) of Atlanta, GA; Vanessa Pomeroy Harrison (Lucas) of Greenville, SC; Michael Wayne Anders of Tuscaloosa, AL; J. T. Frazier III (Abbey) of Dallas, TX; and Landon Kirk Frazier, of Starkville, MS.  Great-grandchildren are Grace Olivia Harrison and Ezra Fox Pomeroy.

Pallbearers will be Wes Pomeroy, Michael Anders, J.T. Frazier, III, Landon Frazier, Don Pomeroy and Wayne Anders.  Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Michael Duckworth, DeWitt Hicks, Dr. Prentiss M. Gordon, former members of the Stuckenschneider Sunday School class, First United Methodist Church, as well as past and present members of the Prairie Medical Society; Baptist Hospice staff; and our many wonderful sitters.

The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Pushmataha Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Post Office Box 9570, Columbus, MS 39705.
