Nell Kyle

May 4, 1926 — February 3, 2017

Nell Nickels Kyle passed away on February 3, 2017 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Services will be held February 10, , 2017 at Shaeffer’s Chapel United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM with Rev. Curtis Bray, officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.


The daughter of the late Otto and Ola Mae Skidmore Nickels, Mrs. Kyle was born May 4, 1926 in Maben, MS (Oktibbeha County). She graduated from Maben High School and worked for the original Trailways Bus Company (called Southern Bus Lines) in Birmingham, AL where she met her husband, Clyde B. Kyle.

They married on May 1, 1948 and moved to the Mississippi Delta where they had 3 children- Linda, Benny and Russel. While there, Nell was an active member of the Ruleville Methodist Church and the Ruleville Garden Club and worked at the Bank of Ruleville.

On moving to Columbus in 1971, Nell worked at the First Columbus National Bank as Head Teller and Assistant Vice-President. She was very well known and liked by her customers. Nell was an active member of Shaeffer’s Chapel Methodist Church---helping it to grow and thrive.

Nell loved her yard and all plants and flowers. It was amazing what she could accomplish on her own! She was a true Southern Lady---look up the meaning of the word and you have Nell Kyle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Agnes Nickels, her brother, Billy Nickels, her husband, Clyde B. Kyle, her son, Russel Kyle, her granddaughter, Jennifer Slaughter, her stepson, Wayne Kyle and her step son-in-law, Clyde Shelton.

She is survived by her daughter-Linda Kyle Slaughter (husband, Arville) of The Woodlands, TX,  son- Benny Kyle (wife, Linda) and , daughter-in-law- Sarah Kyle Koehler (husband, John), all of Columbus, step-daughter- Darline Kyle Shelton, brothers Carl Nickels (wife, Glenda), and Charles Nickels (wife, Sarah), 12 grandchildren and numerous Great-Grandchildren. A special legacy is that twin Great-Grandchildren were born on the day that Nell passed away.

Pallbearers will be Chris Kyle, Chase Kyle, Vic Nickels, Mike Cothran, Jackie Triplett, Mike McCoy, Paul Beaugh and Floyd Lowry along with honorary pallbearer Jay O’Jibway.
