Martha Florence Whitmire

Mrs. Martha Bagwell Whitmire, age 85, of Columbus, died Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory. Services will be Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church on Dowdle Drive with Rev. Ralph Windle officiating. Visitation will be one prior to the service at the church. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 PM at Bethlehem Cemetery, Ackerman, MS with Rev. Roy Hawkins, officiating.

The daughter of the late Frank H. and Grace Ledbetter Bagwell, Mrs. Whitmire was born October 27, 1931 in Fort Worth, TX. She worked many years as a seamstress at the Macon Garment Plant, Blue Bell, and Pryor’s. She loved serving her church, Calvary Baptist and her Sunday School Class, where she served as class secretary of the Ladies #2 Sunday School class for 17 years.  Her favorite hobbies included sewing, crocheting,  and all needle work.

She is survived by her sons and daughter in-law  Brady Lee Whitmire, Jr. of Columbus, and Robert Harvey and Susan  Whitmire of Birmingham, AL  and her daughters and sons-in-law Sharon W.  and Paul Spurgeon of Brookville and Darla  W. and Jerry Griffin of Starkville and one sister and brother-in-law Lanelle B.  and Willie Hightower of West Point. She is also survived by seven grandchildren  Michael Spurgeon, Greg Spurgeon. Virginia Whitmire, Jalice Klein (Chris) Steven Griffin, Jamie Hall (Johnathan) and Whitney Henderson (Ryan) and one great-grandchild Kaycee Hall.

Pallbearers will be Virgil Jones, Ron Moss, Steven Griffin, Ryan Henderson, Johnathan Hall and Greg Spurgeon. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ladies #2 Sunday School Class.
