Hazel Sykes McIlwain, age 92, of Artesia, MS, passed away June 6, 2017,
at Trinity Healthcare. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at
2:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bobby Sanderson
officiating. The interment will i
mmed
iately follow at Artesia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service. Gunter & Peel
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. McIlwain was born April 2, 1925, in Mulden, MS, to the late
Charles and Jennie Mae Bullock Sykes. Many will remember Mrs. Hazel for her
love of gardening, flowers, and working alongside her husband at the Artesia
Hardware Store. She also served as town librarian and town clerk for many
years in Artesia. She was a deeply devoted Christian woman and member of
Artesia United Methodist Church. In additioin to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, James "Emmett" McIlwain, Jr., brother,
Stanley Sykes of Greenwood, MS, and sister, Dale Sykes Owens of Artesia.
Survivors include her daughters, Madalene McIlwain of Starkville, MS,
Camille Black of West Point, MS, and Jenny Black of Moundeville, AL,
sisters, Sue Sykes Henley of Verona, MS, and Celia Sykes Mehaffey of
Pensacola, FL, and grandchildren, Michael David Black of Starkville, MS,
Tacara Nicole Black of West Point, MS, and Cody Black of Tuscaloosa, AL.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
