Mr. J. W. Perkins, age 88, died Friday morning, July 21, 2017 at his home in Columbus. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, July 24 2017 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. John Rhodes officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to the time of the service. Burial will immediately follow in Ebenezer Cemetery in Fernbank, AL, with Rev. Granville Wiggins assisting at the graveside service.
The son of the late Otis Posey and Birdie Ann Adams Perkins, Mr. Perkins was born March 21, 1929 in Fayette, AL. He was a member of Victory Tabernacle Church. He was part-owner of Perkins Butane and Gas Co., before he began his employment at General Tire and Rubber. He was employed at General Tire in maintenance for 23 years. He was an avid crappie fisherman and deer hunter. He was married to the love of his life Lovie Gwendolyn Smith Perkins, who died June 11, 2017, for 69 years. He was also predeceased by his brother Rev. Lawrence Perkins and two sisters Ruth Gardner and Ruby Coleman.
He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law Patrick Perkins, of Gulfport, MS and Andy and Teresa Perkins of Columbus, MS, his brother and sister-in-law Lannie and Mildred Perkins of Columbus, and his sisters and brother-in-law Annette Colvin of Warren, AR and Shirley Williams and Myra and Larry Frye , all of Columbus. He is also survived by seven grandchildren James Patrick Perkins (Lorea), Tina Marie Perkins, Matthew Colin Perkins (Jamie), Jeremy Perkins (Mary), Allison Leighann Perkins, Heather Suzanne Riley (William) and Amy Diane Vaden (Caleb) and 12 great grandchildren.
