Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, Columbus, went home to be with the Lord August 21 at her home at the age of 101. Anyone who knew Mary loved her. Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband Zola, her parents Claude and Nancy Herard, brother Forrest Herard (Son), and sister, Avis, who also died at the age of 101. Mary was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church of Columbus and she loved Jesus with all her heart.
Mary’s work record was active and diverse. She was born during hard times in Stewart, Mississippi June 21, 1916. She farmed with her husband in the Delta of Mississippi, worked at Seminole Manufacturing after coming to Columbus, ran Frisco Beauty Shop for years, truck farmed with her husband and children after moving to “the country” supplying a number of local grocery stores with produce, sold Avon for years while working at Caledonia Manufacturing and ran a house rental business until she was 98. A love of her heart was her work in the church throughout her life, and her relationship with her wonderful Sunday School class.
Mary is survived by a beautiful family that was the love her life. She has three children, Monty (Marie), Anderson, South Carolina, Ronnie (Sheri) of Ringgold, Georgia, and Nancy Mitchell of Columbus. Mary has five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren: Alan Mitchell (Alex), Leslie May (Ashley, Jake, Grant, Ella), Elizabeth Jordan (Jason, Reed and Madelynn), Leigh Anne Terry (Zac, Eliza Pearl and Hattie Grace) and Melissa Mitchell.
A celebration of life will be held Friday August 25 at 11:00 A.M. at the Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roy Hawkins and Pastor Ralph Windle officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Reeds Chapel Cemetery Stewart, Mississippi. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Thursday August 24, 2017 and again Friday one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Alan Mitchell, Ashley May, Alex Mitchell, Grant May, Zac Terry, and Reed Jordan.
