Jeffrey Warren Montgomery, 48, died in his home in Macon , MS , on Friday, November 3, 2017. Jeff was born in Columbus , MS , on May 29, 1969 to Billy Joe (B.J.) and Carmen Montgomery.
Jeff never met a stranger. Gregarious was his default setting. He loved his friends and family and invested his well-known energy, making sure they knew. He was generous to a fault. Not only would he offer someone the shirt off his back but also his coat and hat. Jeff was always on the go and loved to travel to see family and friends wherever they were, from Australia to the Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale . A natural salesman, Jeff spent most of his career in the automotive industry, selling cars. He co-owned My Car Lot in Starkville for 10 years.
Hunting was Jeff’s lifelong passion. If he wasn’t hunting, he was preparing for the next season. He enjoyed being a member of Magowah Gun Club where he was currently serving as President. He was also a member of the Bigbee Valley Hunting Club and the men’s Thursday Night Pic-N-Cut River Crew, a group who thoroughly enjoyed his mastery of the outdoor grill.
Jeff was a member of St. Paul ’s Episcopal Church and Magnolia Tennis Club and a former member of Rotary Club, Lions Club, and the Chamber of Commerce in Macon , MS . He supported many local organizations, including the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Macon , MS , where he could be seen walking with his children some Sundays, the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society, Camp Rising Sun, and more. The state of Mississippi saw him fit to be a licensed Notary Public for the past 11 years.
Jeff graduated from the Mississippi University for Women with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He also attended the University of Mississippi and was a notorious member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. If he wasn’t pulling for the Ole Miss Rebels, he was surely cussing them. He was honored to be connected to Blue Mountain College that Brigadier General Mark Perrin Lowrey, his great-great grandfather, founded in 1873. Jeff graduated from high school at Heritage Academy in Columbus , MS where he lettered in football and tennis.
His proudest achievements by far were his son and daughter. He is survived by them, Garner and Sarah Elizabeth of Starkville , his parents, B.J. and Carmen of Columbus, and his sister, Marian and her husband, the Reverend Don Chancellor of Como . Jeff is preceded in death by his brother, Michael Joe, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Vanderbilt Cotton of Florence , MS and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Warren Montgomery of Edwards, MS.
Services will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 10:30am at St. Paul ’s Episcopal Church in Columbus , MS with the Reverend Anne Harris and the Reverend Seth Walley officiating. His remains will be interred in a private ceremony at the columbarium at St. Paul ’s.
Remembrances may be made to the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society, P.O. Box 85 , Columbus , MS 39703-0085 .
