Estanislado Guiterrez Torrez

Estanislado G. “Tony” Torrez, age 84, died Friday, November 10, 2017 at his home in Columbus. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home and Crematory, 2nd Avenue North. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 9:30 AM to the time of the service in the Atrium of Annunciation Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection, with Father Jeffrey Waldrep, Celebrant, will follow at 11:00 AM with the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard participating. Interment, with military honors, will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The son of the late Manuel and Estafana Gutierrez Tores, Mr. Torrez was born May 7, 1933 in Rodey, New Mexico. He enlisted in the US Air Force at the age of 18 and retired with twenty one years of service with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He also retired with twenty years of employment from Civil Service and worked at the Columbus Air Force Base Commissary in the meat department. His last employer for nineteen years was Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He was a communicant and very active member of Annunciation Catholic Church, serving as an usher for many years. He also organized and directed the annual church blood drive for twenty seven years. He was a member of the Eugene T. Hicks Assembly 2734, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Through the Knights, he participated in the annual Tootsie Roll Drive and the Thanksgiving meals to the needy. During the period of Lent, he volunteered in the kitchen on Fridays cooking for the Friday night Fish Fry. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers Genovivo Gutierrez and Michael Torres, a sister Mary Romero and an infant son, Anthony Rey Torrez.

He is survived by his wife Lupe Barela Torrez of Columbus, his two daughters and sons-in-law Grace and Mike Sudduth of Millport, AL and Rose Marie and Danny Maness, Jr. of Bessemer, AL, his brother and sister-in-law Manuel and Elsa Torres of La Mesa, NM and his three sisters Pauline Salinas and Emma Padilla, both of San Antonio, TX and Josephine Barela of Bakersfield, CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Gary Michael Sudduth, Jr. (Brittany) and Jarrett Sudduth(Marisa Fromm) and his great-granddaughter Everly Elizabeth Sudduth.

Honorary pallbearers will be Nancy and Mike Reeves, David Forrester, Ruby Forrester, Jack Mellott and Joann Ferguson.
