Sarah Middlebrook “Sally” McClanahan, age 74, died Monday, November 13, 2017 at her home in Columbus. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home and Crematory, 2nd Avenue North, will be in charge of her arrangements. A memorial service will be Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Covenant United Methodist Church, with Rev. Gene Bramlett and Rev. Ron Thomas officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the memorial service.

The daughter of the late D.T. and Jean Foley Middlebrook, Sally was born July 28, 1943 in Corinth, MS. Her family moved to Columbus in 1960, and she graduated with the Class of 1961 from S.D. Lee Senior High School. Mrs. McClanahan also graduated from Mississippi State College for Women with  a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She taught art in the New Orleans school system for several years, but her avocation was Mental Health. She participated in the National Association of Mental Illness and regularly attended the NAMI conventions. She assisted in setting up the children’s crisis center in New Orleans and helped run a Manic-Depressive support group in New Orleans. She was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son Zack Alexander McClanahan.

Mrs. McClanahan is survived by her husband Dr. Jan T. McClanahan of Columbus, her sister and brother-in-law Carol M. and Jeff Carter of Madison, MS, her daughter-in-law Kim H. McClanahan of Bixby, OK and her brothers –in-law and sister- in- law Hal H.H. McClanahan, III and Katharine W. McClanahan of Columbus and Ray McClanahan of New Orleans, LA, one niece Mandy McClanahan Pullen (Jimmy) and two nephews Wilkes Carter (Rachel) and Jordan Carter.

Her husband would like to thank her caregivers Queenie Shirley, Paula Harris, Lovenia Hill and Lizzie Jones for their love and compassion in taking care of his wife during her illness.
