Floyd M. Hegwood passed from earthly life on Sunday January 28, 2018.
Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral home Friday, February 2, 2018 6 – 8 PM with services at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints , 2808 Ridge Road, on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 2:00 PM.
Floyd was the son of William Griffen and Nannie Mae Mason Hegwood. He attended Redford High School but did not graduate . He said “he went in the front door and out the back”. Later he completed his GED and studied with the Air Force University of Maryland program.
After eating a dozen bananas to meet weight requirements, he transferred to the U.S. Army. He was sent to Japan then Korea, where he was a member of the 5th Mule Train, an outfit transporting supplies and ammunition to the front lines. In Korea he was one of the first men to receive a Blue Uniform when the U.S. Air Force was established.
Upon his return to the States he was stationed at Hill AFB, Utah where he met his wife, Elaine Harris. They were married 13 September 1952 in Elko, Nevada. Floyd was the 19th permanent party man to be assigned to the AF Academy. There he served as NCO Aid to the Dean of Faculty. When he left the Academy, Floyd studied computers and finished his AF carrier in that field. He helped implement computer systems throughout Asia
During his 23 years of AF service, he was assigned to seven Military bases stateside and five overseas tours, Japan, Korea, England, Tiawan and Philippines. He retired in June 1970. As a civilian, Floyd brought his family to Columbus AFB where he served as computer analyst and Director of Computer Operations.
Floyd loved all animals. He raised and trained horses for several years. One on his friends calls him a horse whisperer. He was President of the Columbus Riding Club and was active on the show circuit.
Floyd was predeased by his parents, sister Beulah, and brothers Wavy Neal (Mickey) Hutchinson, Cleo, Charles and Leslie Hegwood.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elaine H. Hegwood; his sons Terry (Teresa Bobbio) of Chesapeake, Va.; and Randy (Glenda Porter) of Columbus,his granddaughters Crystal Lea and Kellie Rae Hegwood, Columbus; Rachel (Tony Moore, Chesapeake and grandson Byron Smith of Nashville, Tn. He has four great grandchildren Holland and Houston Gandy and Anthony and Daniella Moore. He is also survived by his sisters-in law Maxine Hegwood, Ida Mae Kittrel, Shirley (Art) Thompson, Connie (Doyle) Slater and Brother-in Law, Jed (Carol) Harris and an assemblage of nieces and nephews.
Pall bearers will be the AF Honor Guard.
