Walter L. McKay, Jr., age 87, of Columbus, MS, passed away February 5, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Anne Harris officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Mr. McKay's cremains will be placed in the columbarium at St. Paul's. Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory College St. location is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McKay was born July 20, 1930, in Vicksburg, MS, to the late Walter L. and Gladys Mae McNemar McKay, Sr. He served 8 years in the United States Air Force and worked for the Social Security Administration for 27 years.
Walter was a well loved soul and served everyone he knew. He had a generous heart and will be greatly missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Mr. McKay graduated from Culkin Academy High School and from Mississippi College. He was an active volunteer with Contact Helpline and a longtime board member. He volunteered with Columbus Arts Council, Golden Triangle Hospice, Friends of the Library and RSVP, and he supported the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society and Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary. In addition to his parents, Mr. McKay was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Survivors include his sisters, Mary McKay Stroud of Belden, MS, and Linda Johnson Mize of Reedsport, OR, sister-in-law, Eleanor McKay of Henderson, NV, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the volunteer organizations that Walter enjoyed.
