Austin Eugene "Gene" Reed, age 89, of Columbus, MS, passed away May 5, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Friendship Cemetery with military honors and Rev.
Melvin Mordecai officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 9, 2018 , from 1:00 - 1:45 PM at Memorial Gunter Peel Funeral Home & Crematory College St. location.
Mr. Reed was born April 27, 1929, in Columbus, MS, to the late John Henry and Freddie Mae Fortune Reed. He was a veteran of Korea serving in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion Post 69 and VFW Post 4272. Mr. Reed retired from MUW as an electrician and was also self employed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Reed, second wife, Peggy Reed, children, Martha Hood, Bonnie Hudson, and Ricky Langford, and siblings, Freddie Mabel Reed, Ed Reed, Johnny Reed, Charles "Sonny" Reed, Billy Reed, James Reed, and Dewitt Reed.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Reed, children, Jean Marie Barrett of Columbus, MS, Mary McDill of Columbus, MS, Jerry Langford of Columbus, MS, Mary Harrison and her husband Bo of Columbus, MS, Carey Chappell of West
Point, MS, Steve Chappell of Tallahassee, FL, and Glynn Chappell of Snellville, GA, sister, Mary Louise Wilcoxson of Columbus, MS, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
