Margaret Elizabeth“Peggy” Ellis Webb died at home on September 28, 2018, at the age of 96. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 6th, at Beersheba Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Columbus, MS, with visitation in the church Fellowship Hall from 9:30 to 10:45 prior to the service.
Peggy was born in Pickens County, AL, on September 24, 1922. She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years John D. Webb, her parents Dr. Leon C. Ellis and Ina Egan Ellis, her sister Gabie Ellis Nolan, and brothers Gillman, Billy, Donald, Bernard, Nimrod, and Patrick Ellis.
She is survived by daughters Ina Walters (Clinton) and Gabie Smith (Greg) of Columbus and son Jack Webb (Marie) of Northport, AL; grandchildren Mark Walters, Melissa Price, David Walters, and Jessica McDill; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Peggy was a graduate of Lee High School, a communicant of Annunciation Catholic Church, a retiree of MUW, and a member of Shuk-ho-a Tom-a-ha chapter of the DAR. After retirement, she, along with fellow DAR member Lida Logan, compiled data from court house and funeral home records and published two lengthy books on the births, deaths, and marriages in Lowndes County and the surrounding area from 1821 to 1987. Copies of the books are located in the Genealogy Research Room of the Columbus Lowndes Public Library.
