Robert M. Redwood

Robert M. (Bob) Redwood, Sr. passed away October 16, 2018 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Services will be held Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Gunter Peel  2nd Ave N.Chapel with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating; burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

He was born in Columbus, Mississippi to the late Harry R. Redwood, Sr. and Flora Mae Martin Redwood on August 18, 1931.

He attended Lee High School in Columbus where he played football, basketball, and ran track.  After graduation in 1950, he attended Chillicothe Business School for one year then worked for California Eastern at Columbus Air Base as a photographer in the photo reproduction section.  When the Korean conflict started he joined the US Air Force.  He was stationed at Keesler Field in Biloxi where he became an instructor in the airborne radio and radar school.  He was deployed to Japan’s Tatchigowa Air Force Base where he served the remainder of his enlistment.

After military duty, he attended Mississippi State University and earned a degree in electrical engineering and obtained the credentials of Registered Professional Engineer.  After graduation, he worked for American Bosch for 8 years, and then went to General Tire and Rubber Company (later known as Omnova) where he retired after 30 years as Engineering Manager.

Bob loved the Lord, his family, and his friends.  He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught the Adult Singles Class for 20 years.  He was a Gideon for 15 years and part of the Gideon Prison Ministry.

Bob enjoyed playing tennis and later developed a passion for playing golf.  He developed many long lasting friendships and created great memories on the course.  His favorite spectator sport was football and he was an avid Mississippi State fan to the very end.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Harry Redwood, Jr. (Dick).

He is survived by a family that loved him dearly.  His wife of 68 years, Joan Redwood; daughters, Kathryn (Bo) Andrews of Birmingham, AL, Jo (Chris) Still of Murfreesboro, TN; sons, Bobby (Jeri Sue) Redwood of Wellington, CO and Dr. Tommy (Lyn) Redwood of Tyrone, GA; eight grandchildren: Chris (Rachael) Wood of Birmingham, AL, Austin (Katie) Wood of Tuscaloosa, AL, Jack (Emily) Thomas Redwood of Starkville, MS, Rob Redwood of Ft. Worth, TX, Will Redwood of Tyrone, GA, Dr. Drew Johnson and Hanna Johnson of Atlanta, GA, and Gracie Still of Murfreesboro, TN.  Bob was also blessed with eight great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.  John Latham will be his honorary pallbearer.
