Clara Scroggins Gilmer

September 28, 1943 — November 30, 2018

Clara Scroggins Gilmer passed away on November 30, 2018 at the age of 75 in Columbus, Mississippi. Mrs. Gilmer was born on September 28, 1943 in Yazoo City, Mississippi. She was a graduate of the Mississippi University for Women and taught school for 31 years.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an amazing teacher - she often joked that she had taught English to half of the residents of Lowndes County as during her career she taught at Lee High School, Caldwell High School, New Hope High School and Caledonia High School. She served several years on the Lowndes County Library Board, and also served as President of the Gideon’s Ladies Auxiliary. And, most importantly, she was a faithful follower of Christ, serving and teaching Bible Study Fellowship and Sunday School at New Salem Baptist Church in Caledonia, Mississippi for many years.

Mrs. Gilmer is preceded in death by her father, Ray Scroggins; mother, Edna Scroggins; and granddaughter, Joy Kathryn Causey. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 53 years, John Gilmer; two daughters, Julie Bennett (Phil) of Fort Worth, Texas and Kim Causey (Ray) of Brandon, Mississippi; three grandsons, John Bennett, Nate Bennett and Will Causey; two brothers, Barney Ray Scroggins of Flora, Mississippi, and Raymond Scroggins of Yazoo City, Mississippi; two sisters, Alice Brooks of Bentonia, Mississippi, and Charlotte Hogue of Brandon, Mississippi; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 2, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 at New Salem Baptist Church in Caledonia, Mississippi. Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 3, 2018, at 10:00 at New Salem Baptist Church with interment at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Vernon, Alabama. Memorial Gunter Peel is handling all arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Phil Bennett, Ray Causey, Glenn Gilmer, Johnny Gilmer, David Lockhart, Robbie Hogue, Ray Scroggins, John Bennett and Nate Bennett.

Honorary Pallbearers are Gary Holtman, Max Watson, Lewis Cantrell, Jim Smith, Stan Bates, Frank Howell and the men of the New Salem Adult Sunday School classes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Palmer Home for Children in Columbus, Mississippi.
